The Prius has been named the most fuel-efficient car in 2008, keeping the top spot for the third year in a row.

The Toyota Motor Corp. five-door hatchback gets 35.5 km per liter, followed by Honda Motor Co.'s Civic Hybrid sedan with 31.0 km, according to the annual list of standard-size cars compiled by the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry.

Third place went to the Toyota Vitz compact, a nonhybrid. It gets 24.5 km per liter. The top three vehicles, selected from among vehicles that were available as of Dec. 31, finished in the same order for the second straight year.
