Former Cabinet minister Jitsuo Inagaki has died at his Tokyo home, apparently due to illness, police said Monday. He was 80.

Inagaki was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1977 and served as Cabinet minister heading the Hokkaido and Okinawa development agencies under Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto. He lost a Lower House election in 2000.

He was arrested in 2004 due to an investment law violation involving his company. His guilty sentence of two years in prison, suspended for five years, became final in 2005.
