The government said Friday the Self-Defense Forces participation in the U.N. peacekeeping operations on the Golan Heights will be extended for another six months until Sept. 30.

The decision, made at a Cabinet meeting, came in response to a U.N. Security Council decision in December to extend the mission of the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force on the Golan Heights in southern Syria, officials said.

The SDF's current deployment period ends on March 31.

A total of 45 Japanese, mainly with the Ground Self-Defense Force, are taking part in logistic duties in UNDOF, which has been working to maintain a ceasefire between Syria and Israel on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights since 1974.
