BUSAN, South Korea (Kyodo) A bedridden South Korean woman applied Tuesday in Busan for a health book given to victims of radiation-related illnesses from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings.

Chong Nam Su, 88, filed the application at the Japanese Consulate General after a law took effect Monday eliminating the requirement that applications be made only in Japan.

She previously sued the central and local governments demanding she be allowed to apply without visiting Japan.

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry expects around 300 people from South Korea, Brazil, the United States and other places to seek recognition as being eligible for aid available to hibakusha.

Because Chong is hospitalized, her son, Kang Sok Chong, 69, submitted the application to the consulate general on her behalf.
