SENDAI (Kyodo) People in Kurihara, Miyagi Prefecture, held a memorial service Sunday for victims of a magnitude-7.2 earthquake in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures six months ago, offering silent prayers at 8:43 a.m., the exact time the quake struck.

Attendants at the service in the city’s Kurikoma district, most of whom are still living in temporary housing, also expressed hope that they will be able to have a good new year.
