Shipping line Nippon Yusen K.K. will spend ¥70 billion over six years to limit its carbon-dioxide emissions.

The Tokyo-based firm plans to use some of the funds to add solar panels to one of its car-carrier vessels, the company said.

Nippon Yusen's investment includes ¥35 billion to introduce new, less-polluting engines to its fleet to help it cope with rising fuel costs. The average price of 380 Centistoke marine bunker fuel, used by ships, surged 67 percent in the three months that ended June 30, to $579.07 a metric ton. It traded at $675.5 on Monday.
