NTT East Corp. said Wednesday a disruption in its Internet service Tuesday evening and early Wednesday was caused by a cascade failure affecting transmission equipment.

The breakdown started around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday and affected 2.39 million customers — a national record for land-line Net connections. Services were fully resumed at around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after the data transmission equipment was rebooted, NTT East said.

Disrupted services included the B Flets fiber-optic lines provided jointly by NTT East and Internet service providers, ADSL and broadband ISDN, the company said. It received more than 10,000 complaints.
