Icebreaker off to rescue fisherman

Japan’s exploration ship at the Showa Base has embarked on a rescue mission after receiving news Thursday that a fishing boat crewman fell ill Antarctic waters.

The icebreaker Shirase was contacted by a South African maritime rescue organization Thursday afternoon and told that a 56-year-old Russian on board a Spanish fishing boat has symptoms including paralysis of the left half of his body.

The Shirase is expected to reach the fishing boat, which was at a point some 600 km away from the Showa Base, in about two days and medics with the expedition team will treat him, according to the team.
