A Liberal Democratic Party committee approved communication minister Yoshihide Suga’s plan Thursday to order NHK to feature more reports about North Korea’s abductions of Japanese in its shortwave radio broadcasts.
Most of the panel members had been cautious about approving the plan, but in the end, the committee agreed to because the abductees’ relatives had requested this.
There has been strong criticism, including some from within the LDP, that the order violates freedom of the press.
