The Metropolitan Police Department opened a toll-free phone information service Thursday to expose the public to typical tactics used in remittance-soliciting frauds, which have increased in recent years.</PARAGRAPH>
<PARAGRAPH>In one scenario, the caller will hear someone identifying himself as a policeman who says, 'Your husband is being questioned for groping.' The man then skillfully gives instructions to deposit money, thus allowing the caller to hear specific exchanges between the criminal and the victim.</PARAGRAPH>
<PARAGRAPH>Police will then inform the caller that they do not mediate in private settlements, and ask the caller not to trust the stranger even if he mentions the name of a family member.</PARAGRAPH>
