An Australian military vehicle was damaged Wednesday in Samawah when a roadside bomb exploded as a convoy of Australian and Japanese forces was passing, an official of the multinational forces in Basra said.

The bomb is believed to have been meant for Australian and Japanese troops stationed in the area, the official said.

The Defense Agency said in Tokyo that the Ground Self-Defense Force unit had not suffered any damage.

The bomb exploded at around 9:45 a.m., Japanese officials said.

Protected by British and Australian forces, about 600 GSDF troops are deployed to Samawah to provide humanitarian and reconstruction assistance.
