SYDNEY (Kyodo) A Japanese tourist drowned Sunday while snorkeling off a tropical island in Australia's Great Barrier Reef, police said.

The 55-year-old man, whose name was not immediately made public, was found floating face down in the water at North Cove Beach on Green Island, northeast of Cairns, at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday.

The manager of a resort on the island said lifeguards pulled him from the water and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, but the Royal Flying Doctor Service declared him dead at the scene.

The man was believed to have traveled to Cairns with two sons in their late teens.
