MERIDA, Mexico (Kyodo) Crown Prince Naruhito visited the Mayan ruins of Uxmal on the Yucatan Peninsula on Saturday.

The prince flew to Merida on a Mexican government airplane and spent two hours touring the Uxmal ruins, the relics of the Mayan civilization, which thrived between the seventh and 11th centuries.

Donning a straw hat to fend off near 40 degree temperatures, he climbed to the top of the House of the Magician, a 32-meter-high pyramid the Mayan people built for rain-making rituals.

"It is really amazing," the prince said as he viewed the jungle dotted with ruins.

The prince is scheduled to fly to Canada on Sunday.
