BEIJING (Kyodo) Japan and China began talks Monday afternoon in a bid to narrow their differences over gas exploration rights in the East China Sea, with Beijing expected to present a new proposal to resolve the dispute.

The Chinese plan is expected in response to Japan’s proposal to jointly develop the area’s gas fields that was presented during the previous round of senior working-level discussions in Tokyo last fall, Japanese delegates to the talks said.
