A Japanese student is recovering after being stabbed in the chest and abdomen in an apparently random attack in southern England, police said Monday.

The man, who is 24, was attacked Saturday evening on a quiet street in Brighton.

Two men from Brighton were arrested by police Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder. They have been released, subject to bail conditions and pending further inquiries.

Police believe there were no witnesses and are still trying to establish a motive and learn what the student was doing in that area of the city, which is described as "very isolated."
