A 39-year-old Nagoya man has been arrested for beating a male acquaintance to death with a frying pan, police said Sunday.

Aichi Prefectural Police officials identified the suspect as Yoshihito Isojima, who was arrested Saturday evening in his apartment in Nakamura Ward.

According to investigations, Isojima got into an argument with Kazuhiko Matsunaga, 36, in the apartment at around 5 p.m. He struck Matsunaga on the head and in the face with the frying pan, which had a diameter of about 30 cm, dozens of times, police said.

Isojima was quoted as telling police he attacked his acquaintance because he ridiculed him, and that he regrets his actions. The two men met in a park and came to be drinking partners, and had been drinking heavily on Saturday, according to investigators.

A woman who had been posting fliers in the mailboxes of Isojima's building called police to say she could hear two men quarreling in one of the apartments. Police who were dispatched to the scene found Matsunaga already unconscious, investigators said.
