A high school student died Sunday morning after a minicar he and two other students were riding in fell into the ocean at a pier in Taketoyo, Aichi Prefecture, police said.
The drowned student was identified as Yusuke Watarai, 17, a sophomore from Aichi Prefecture.
The two students who survived the accident told police that Watarai was trapped in the car when it fell off the pier at around 4 a.m., while they escaped through an open window.
Firefighters pulled Watarai from the water one hour later and he was confirmed dead at a hospital, police said.
