Mystery writer Natsuo Kirino failed to clinch the 2004 Edgar Allen Poe Award for best novel for her thriller "Out," the Mystery Writers of America said Thursday night in New York.

The award was won by British novelist Ian Rankin, for "Resurrection Men."

The two other contenders were Ken Bruen, for "The Guards," and Jacqueline Winspear, for "Maisie Dobbs."
