China Airlines formally announced Monday it would not appeal a court ruling ordering it to pay 5.026 billion yen in compensation over a plane crash at Nagoya airport in 1994.

Following the Taiwan carrier's decision, a majority of the 236 plaintiffs in the case are expected to drop their own pre-emptive appeal, lodged Jan. 8 at the Nagoya High Court.

China Airlines had until Monday to appeal.

In announcing the decision to reporters in Nagoya, Keiji Isaji, a lawyer representing the airline, said the carrier had taken into account the feelings of the victims' relatives in making its decision.
