SAMAWAH, Iraq – Nearly 90 percent of residents in the southern Iraq city of Samawah and vicinity welcome the deployment of Japanese troops to aid in reconstruction work there, according to a poll released Monday.
But about 40 percent of respondents to the poll, which Kyodo News commissioned a local newspaper to conduct early this month, said they were opposed to any operations by the Ground Self-Defense Force perceived as supporting the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq.
