An Afghan national working near a road construction project that is being financed by Japan was shot to death Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.
The ministry said later in the day that the deceased was a member of the Afghan military who was serving at a checkpoint near the construction site, located about 50 km from Kandahar.
He was not employed as a security guard at the site, the ministry said, adding that there were no Japanese nationals working on the construction site.
A security guard at the site found the wounded man and had him taken to a hospital. There were no witnesses to the shooting, the ministry said.
