Former lawmaker Muneo Suzuki successfully underwent surgery Wednesday to treat stomach cancer and will be discharged from the hospital within a month, his office said.

The office said the cancer had not spread. It declined to disclose the name of the hospital, however, citing safety concerns. Earlier this month, Suzuki's Tokyo office received a letter containing a live rifle bullet with a message calling him a "traitor."

Suzuki, on trial on charges of taking bribes, said earlier this month he would not run in the Nov. 9 House of Representatives general election due to the surgery.
