A 72-year-old homeless man died Monday morning after being beaten on a pedestrian overpass near JR Omiya Station in Saitama, police said.

Police suspect the assailant may be another homeless man, and they believe the incident occurred during a quarrel over territory.

The victim was identified as Saburo Okubo. He and four other street people were sleeping on benches when the male assailant suddenly began punching them at around 4:30 a.m. and demanding money if they wanted to stay there.

One of the men ran to a nearby police box for help, and when officers arrived at the scene, they found Okubo unconscious. The other four sustained minor injuries.

The assailant was described as being in his 30s and about 170 cm tall. He recently began hanging around the area where the attack took place, police said.
