A woman in her 70s died Thursday at a Nagoya hospital after losing an excessive amount of blood because of a doctor's error, hospital officials said Friday.

Hospital Director Kenjiro Kori acknowledged during a news conference that it was a case of malpractice and apologized to the patient's family. He also pledged efforts to prevent a recurrence.

Police are investigating the incident at Nagoya City University Hospital in Mizuho Ward as a case of professional negligence resulting in death.

According to the hospital, the accident occurred as the woman, who was suffering from acute liver failure, was undergoing dialysis.
