MANILA – Philippine police have arrested four people in connection with the murder of a 54-year-old Japanese man in the southern Philippines late last week, police said Tuesday.
Investigator Vicente Danao said the body of Akito Hayashi, from Hiroshima Prefecture, was recovered Monday from the Bingcungan river, south of Davao City. He had been stabbed at least seven times.
The police said Hayashi may have been killed early Saturday in his car, which was found bloodied and abandoned near a bus terminal in Davao City, about 960 km south of Manila. Police believe his body was dumped in the river after he was killed.
Among those arrested is Hayashi’s 17-year-old girlfriend.
The other suspects, two men and a woman, reportedly accompanied Hayashi and his girlfriend to a bar Friday night and later killed him, allegedly at her behest.
Police said murder and robbery charges are expected to be filed against the four.
