The nation's rainy season is over for the year, now that it has ended in the northern part of the Tohoku region, the Meteorological Agency said Thursday.

The rain system in northern Tohoku -- Akita, Aomori and Iwate prefectures -- weakened Thursday, bringing an end to the rainy season two days earlier than average, the agency said. Hokkaido does not have a rainy season.

Areas on the Sea of Japan coast saw the morning open with clear skies and high temperatures, the agency said, adding that the archipelago is expected to see fine weather during the next week.

The agency said most areas in northeastern Japan received far more rainfall than average during the rainy season due to this month's typhoons.

Miyako in Iwate Prefecture, which normally has about 200 mm of rainfall, registered 434 mm, while Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture, which has 165 mm normally, received 359 mm.
