A 19-year-old woman abducted here over the weekend by a man who broke into her family's home armed with what appeared to be a hunting gun was found safe Monday in neighboring Tochigi Prefecture, and her suspected abductor was arrested soon after, police said.

A group of hikers found Miwako Tsubaki, a technical school student who was taken from her parent's home early Saturday morning during a robbery, walking alone down a mountain in Kanuma at around 1 p.m., police said.

Tsubaki reportedly told police she escaped from the man's car while he slept. She said she heard a shot fired as she ran away.

The man was arrested around 3:30 p.m. near the exit of the Sano-Fujioka interchange of the Tohoku expressway after commandeering the car of Tetsuo Gunji, a 46-year-old police officer, and his wife, who were preparing to take a fishing trip to Tochigi Prefecture, police said.
