An umbrella body of 282 labor unions at Toyota Motor Corp. and its affiliates said Friday it will not propose a unified monthly pay hike at wage talks with management in spring.

Susumu Jinno, head of the Federation of All Toyota Workers' Unions, told a news conference the federation will not recommend the unified demand, saying, "We will put emphasis on honoring independent decisions by each labor union belonging to our federation."

The federation was to officially make the proposal at a two-day meeting of the central committee comprising deputies from member unions.

The gathering got under way in Fukuoka on Friday.
