Prosecutors demanded the death sentence Thursday for a man accused of torching a jewelry shop in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, murdering six of its female employees and stealing jewels worth 140 million yen.

Kazuo Shinozawa, 50, a former restaurant manager from Oyama, is on trial at the Utsunomiya District Court. He has denied he intended to kill the women, saying that the explosion occurred when he used a lighter to threaten them.
