The United States should stop bashing Japan and try to solve trade friction and other disputes between the two countries within multilateral talks, U.S. and Japanese academics said in a new book.

"No More Bashing -- Building a New Japan-United States Economic Relationship" says the traditional U.S. policy of pressuring Japan to deregulate its economy "is likely to be ineffective, if not counterproductive in the future."

The book was written by Fred Bergsten, director of the Institute for International Economics; Marcus Noland, a senior fellow at the Washington-based think tank; and Takashi Ito, a professor at Hitotsubashi University and former vice finance minister for international affairs.

Ito said Wednesday that the book is aimed at prompting a revision in U.S. trade policy.
