The U.S. attack submarine Bremerton left port here Monday without undue attention from the city government, sources close to the local government said.

The Foreign Ministry asked local governments not to disclose the schedules of U.S. submarines after terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sept. 11. Local governments often notify fishing authorities and other parties when subs are coming and going because U.S. submarines use nuclear power and may carry nuclear weapons, raising concern among those worried about the potential for nuclear accidents.

The 6,080-ton Bremerton, which is capable of firing cruise missiles, left port shortly after 2 p.m. Monday, the sources said.
