YOKOHAMA – Police have arrested a 59-year-old homeless man in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, on suspicion of killing an acquaintance after a quarrel, police said Thursday.
Following the alleged incident, the suspect is believed to have lived just 10 meters away from the victim’s corpse for around a week, police said.
The suspect has been identified as Yukio Iguchi, an unemployed man from Aichi Prefecture, while the victim is identified as 53-year-old Shinji Ando.
Ando, who hailed from Shizuoka Prefecture, also had no fixed address or job.
The police said Ando’s decomposing body was found on an isolated stretch of beach under the Nishi-Sho expressway bypass Wednesday evening.
The discovery was made after authorities were alerted of the alleged crime by a friend of the suspect.
Iguchi has admitted to the killing, describing the victim as “an acquaintance who lives nearby,” the police said.
According to investigators, Iguchi was reportedly drinking with Ando and three other homeless people around Aug. 1 when he had a quarrel with Ando and killed him with a blunt instrument.
The body was left at the scene, around 10 meters away from a makeshift shed in which Iguchi had been living following the alleged murder, police said.
