The Cabinet on Tuesday approved a plan for Princess Akiko, 19, the elder daughter of Prince Tomohito of Mikasa, to study at Oxford University's Merton College in Britain from October to June as a privately financed student.
Akiko, a sophomore at Gakushuin University, will study history and archaeology. She is expected to be readmitted to Gakushuin as a junior based on credits earned at Merton.
The Crown Prince studied at Oxford for two years beginning in October 1983.
