Arrest in baby’s death
OSAKA — Police arrested a 28-year-old woman Saturday on suspicion of killing her 1-year-old daughter at her home in Hirakata, Osaka Prefecture.
Chieko Tamura is suspected of binding her daughter Ayaka by wrapping her in a quilt around 4 p.m. Friday and leaving her unattended for 21/2 hours to die, police said.
Tamura admitted wrapping the girl in the quilt, but denied the murder charge, police said, adding that they believe the act itself constitutes murderous intent or willful negligence.
Tamura found Ayaka unconscious and pale at around 6:30 p.m. when her husband asked her where the child was, according to police.
The baby was rushed to a hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly afterward, they said.
