As swiftly as they sprouted several years ago in a bid to make quick money, many business-related Web sites in Thailand have either closed down or been abandoned due to diminishing capital, low market penetration or ineffective business strategies.

A businessman who wanted to sell products from Bangkok's popular weekend market Jatujak via the Internet to customers abroad said he is about to close his Web site because of poor business.

"Though Jatujak market has various kinds of unique goods from Thailand, I find it hard to run an e-commerce business because of the very expensive transportation costs," he said. "There are many people visiting my Web site who want to order goods, but they cannot afford the freight costs."

Analysts say the major problem at many companies is a lack of proper understanding of e-commerce, particularly because most owners have never owned a business before.
