Doctors at Chiba University Hospital conducted the first round of gene therapy Tuesday on a male patient with esophageal cancer.

Although there have been a number of gene therapy trials on cancer patients, including those with kidney cancer and lung cancer, this is believed to constitute the world’s first gene therapy treatment of an esophageal cancer patient, according to the state-run university’s team of doctors.
