A police officer hanged himself Monday night in Asahi Ward here after fatally stabbing a civilian employee of the Kanagawa Prefectural Police whom he had been stalking, police said Tuesday.
Asst. Inspector Shinji Okabe, 42, hanged himself in the apartment of Shinobu Kaizuka, 28, after stabbing her in the corridor outside her room, police said.
The two were members of the force's marching band. Okabe had given clarinet lessons to Kaizuka since she was hired by the force in April for its administrative staff, the police said.
Police rushed to the apartment after a resident made an emergency call saying she had heard a woman screaming shortly after 10 p.m.
