An elderly couple were found dead in their apartment in Yokohama at least 10 days after their death, the man from an apparent heart attack and his bed-ridden wife from subsequent starvation, it was learned Monday.

According to local police, the couple were found late Saturday afternoon, when the superintendent of the apartment came around to collect rent and smelled a foul odor.

Investigations show that the 73-year-old male occupant, who was not identified, died of a heart attack around Oct. 17, and his 71-year-old wife died of starvation around Oct. 23.

The woman was bedridden most of the time, and her husband was taking care of her by himself.

The couple did not socialize with neighbors and had also lost touch with relatives, investigators said.
