-- A Greek gunman arrested Saturday evening after hijacking a busload of Japanese tourists in southern Greece jumped to his death Sunday from a police building, Japanese Embassy officials said.

Christos Kendiras, 48, threw himself out a window of the police headquarters building around 8 a.m., the officials and local police said.

He took the 33 Japanese and two others hostage near the port of Epidaurus, about 80 km southwest of Athens, and surrendered to police at around 7 p.m. Saturday in Piraeus, a port in the suburbs of Athens, police said.

All the hostages, including the group's Greek guide and the bus driver, were released unharmed after the eight-hour ordeal. The 33 Japanese, comprising 32 tourists and a tour conductor, were taken to a hotel in Athens, where they had a meal before retiring to their rooms.
