A 34-year-old woman was arrested Friday on suspicion that she murdered her four-year-old daughter and injured another daughter on Thursday -- more than five years after she was convicted of killing their elder sister, the police said.

Around 7 p.m. Thursday, Yoshinobu Sakai, 43, returned to his Sapporo apartment to find his daughter Chizuki apparently dead and her 2-year-old sister injured. Sakai called the police, but Chizuki was later confirmed dead.

His wife, Akemi, who was not home when he arrived, was arrested after she telephoned the Shiraishi Police Station from an unmanned police box in the city.

Akemi confessed to investigators that at around 3 p.m Thursday she killed Chizuki by drowning her in a sink and tried to kill the 2-year-old by strangling her as she slept.
