Police arrested a 20-year-old unemployed man and four teenagers for allegedly extorting about 5,000 yen from a 19-year-old female college student in Nagoya, police officials said Sunday.

Hideto Hara, 20, of the city's Moriyama Ward, a 17-year-old local operative, and three girls — two aged 16 and another 15 — allegedly threatened the student with a utility blade on a street in Moriyama Ward around 11:30 p.m. last Friday, demanding she lend them money, they said.

The five admitted to the charge, saying they wanted the cash to play around, police said.

The three girls, two from Kanagawa Prefecture, ran away from their homes May 20 and stayed at the house of the 17-year-old boy, who they came to know through the Internet.
