Girls' Day, an annual festival held on March 3 to bless children with good health, is usually celebrated with elaborate dolls, representing the imperial court, adorned in the style of the Heian Period (794 to 1185).
In Fukuoka Prefecture, the city of Yanagawa customarily celebrates with the addition of sagemon, which are special hanging decorations. As for things to do, there will be local handicrafts sold at various galleries from Feb. 11 to April 3, as well as a boat parade on March 15 that will see girls, wearing traditional outfits, carried down the river like princesses. The boat parade will be postponed till March 22 in the case of rain.
