Yatsushiro Myoken Festival 2019

The Yatsushiro Myoken Festival, which is nearly 400 years old and is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, will take place in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, on Nov. 22 and 23.

Roughly 1,700 participants are expected to take part in a 6-kilometer parade from Shioya Hachimangu shrine to the Tosaki-no-Kawara riverbank near Ennoji temple. After the parade ends, the festival will continue with several traditional performances such as a shishimai (lion dance) and an umaoi (chasing horses in the river). (Yuki Yamauchi)
