Club tricks and treats for Halloween

With Halloween falling on a Friday this year, there’s a countrywide wealth of ghoulish fun on offer over the weekend — and even less excuse not to indulge in some serious sartorial inelegance and hit the town.

Of course, some people don’t need Halloween as an excuse to strut their stuff in skintight latex and knee-high boots. If that sounds like you, then on Friday you’ll find plenty of kindred spirits at the Erotica Halloween bash at Warehouse702 in Tokyo’s Azabu Juban. The dress code is described as “erotic, fetish, rubber, SM, sexy nurse, medical, lingerie, bikini and more,” which probably tells you everything you need to know. Music comes courtesy of house DJs Tomoyuki Tanaka, Daishi Dance and Mitomi Tokoto, though you may be too distracted by the SM lounge and erotic fashion show to notice. There’s a total of ¥300,000 in prize money up for grabs for the best costumes.

Elsewhere in the capital, the best bargain comes courtesy of the Shibuya-Aoyama Halloween Festival. Pay the entry fee at one of 19 participating venues — including La Fabrique, Module, Amrax and Loop — and you’ll be given a wristband that lets you into all of the others for free (with one drink-ticket purchase). Whether this translates into 19 times as much fun or 19 times as much traipsing around remains to be seen.

In Osaka, Triangle in Ame-mura is letting things run across the entire weekend, with three days of Halloween-themed parties. Dress to impress on Friday night, as there’s a ¥100,000 prize for the best costume. Expect a soundtrack of rock, electro and indie disco, with guest DJ Koichi Sato and a live turn by Neon. Tokyo-based DJ Mike McKenna tops the bill at Saturday’s Halloween Rampage, while things take a fashionable turn on Sunday, with NYC party-starter Dre Skull and keyboard whiz Tucker leading the charge.

Over in Kyoto, the biggest party looks set to be World’s Halloweeeeeeeeeeen!! bash, featuring guest DJ Rocketman, aka comedian Ryo Fukawa. There’s more of the same at LAB.TRIBE, possibly with less cheesy music.

Finally, if you’re looking for freaky kicks in Nagoya, try Halloween Friday 2008 at Club JB’s and Tightrope in Sakae. Expect a steady diet of house and techno at the former venue, and drag queens, show girls and dumb floor-fillers at the latter.
