Tokyo Chamber Orchestra performs a concert of musical classics at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space on Jan. 19. Titled "Bringing Much Love to You," the concert presents an indulgent program in which the recurring theme, unsurprisingly, is love.
Under the baton of the nationally renowned conductor Naotaka Tachibana, the orchestra will play a timeless repertoire ranging from Bach to musicals and opera to James Bond themes. Lending her vocals to this concert of romantically inclined melodies is the veteran singer, actress and artist, Tokiko Kato. Since her debut in 1966, Kato has been a consistent hitmaker. She will perform some of her own songs, including one of her biggest hits "Hyakumanbon no Bara (A Million Roses.)"
Among the highlights of contemporary and classic musical numbers will be Bach's "Adagio" arranged for orchestra, the beautiful, reflective song "Sunrise, Sunset" from "The Fiddler on the Roof," and dark, jazzy numbers from the hit musical "Chicago." In contrast, the Overture to Rossini's comic opera "The Barber of Seville" will set a more upbeat tone. The theme song from the 1955 James Dean movie "East of Eden," which paints the rich, vast farmland of California's Salinas Valley, against which Steinbeck set his tragic novel about the brutal consequences of love's absence, is also part of the program.
"Bringing Much Love To You" takes place on Jan. 19 (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, 1-8-1 Nishi-Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo, a short walk from Ikebukuro Station's B1 or 2a exits.
