An Air Self-Defense Force officer was arrested Wednesday for allegedly swindling the state out of almost 3 million yen in 2003, ASDF police said.
Capt. Hisahiro Sado, 44, of the headquarters of the ASDF Air Support Command in Chitose, Hokkaido, is suspected of padding a bill for in-flight meals served on a government plane during a cabin crew training program he took charge of in December 2002.
He allegedly pocketed 2.77 million yen on Jan. 22, 2003, when he was a senior officer of the Special Airlift Group, which operates government airplanes, the Chitose Airbase Air Police Squadron said.
The meals were prepared by a hotel in Tomakomai, Hokkaido.
Sources said Sado spent the money on watches, bags and other merchandise with ASDF marks that he then resold to others.
