Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Friday it is recalling 115 Gallant and Legnum due to defective air bags.

The air bags for the front-passenger seats of the vehicles manufactured between November 1996 and January 1997 could fail to inflate fast enough to protect passengers in an accident, MMC said in a report to the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry.

It is MMC’s first corrective move after admitting to secretly repairing vehicle defects.

On Wednesday, the scandal-hit automaker said it had failed to file recall reports with the ministry for 26 types of vehicle defects, and secretly and illegally repaired affected vehicles. The air bag problem is one of the 26 defects the company has admitted to.

MMC will later recall other vehicles to deal with the remaining 25 defects. The 26 defects affect a total of 163,707 cars and sport utility vehicles, including the Lancer, Mirage and Pajero, MMC said.
