Today's take on Stalingrad
In one of Moscow's central subway stations — Arbatskaya — the escalator leading up to the city exit ends in a spacious vestibule. On the front wall, a classic frame several meters high is covered with white plaster. It bears no image, and the white paint must be regularly renewed to avoid ugly cracks.

The camera never lies — or does it? The double-barreled exhibition now on at the Yokohama Museum of Art suggests that it doesn't always tell the truth either.

Rewriting history is unwise
Prime Minister Abe Shinzo has appointed a Cabinet that, according to press reports, contains a number of ministers who want to rewrite the history of the 20th century. They, including the new minister of education, are reported as demanding the rescinding of the statement made in 1995 by former Prime Minister Tomoichi Murayama expressing remorse for Japanese atrocities in Asia.

How The Japan Times saved a foundering battleship, twice
Mikasa! The name of the mighty Japanese battleship will be as familiar to the world's naval historians as it is now to viewers of NHK's Sunday evening drama "Saka no Ue no Kumo" ("Clouds Over the slope"). It was the Mikasa that all but decided the fate of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05, when it led a devastating attack on the Russian fleet in the Battle of Tsushima — a battle set to be played out with due dramatic bluster in the final episode of the NHK TV series next week.

Tibet was never a Utopia
Your April 21 editorial "Torch relay lights up many issues" attaches considerable weight to human rights. If members of your editorial board had paid a visit to China in the past year or so, they would have found that most Chinese are reasonably happy with their lives. I would also like to know if anybody on the editorial board has any knowledge of Tibetan society before 1960, when it was a caste system? The media in the West always like to raise human rights issues concerning China. I believe they are unaware of the privileges enjoyed by the Dalai Lama and lamas before 1960, and the state of human rights for common Tibetans at that time. c.s. tseng

Myopic policies ignore sustainability
Regarding the Nov. 29 article "Workforce may shrink by millions by 2030 (study says)" and similar sentiments: It would seem that both the government and media are intent on feeding us a steady diet of hysteria concerning Japan's graying population and contracting workforce, with nary a voice to the contrary.
