Old ways to break the mold of mass production
The simplicity of form and color on display at "Product Design Today: Creating 'Made in Japan' " is undeniable. The ceramics are predominantly white, wooden items reveal natural grains, cast iron is kept jet black, contours are uncomplicated and there is not one single ostentatious embellishment.

Find art contained at affordable prices
The Container, the freight-container-sized gallery in Nakameguro that has been impressively punching above its weight in Tokyo's art scene since 2011, is taking its mantra of "art for everyone" one step further with its latest show. Described as "shamelessly" manufacturing and retailing contemporary art to make it accessible and affordable to anyone, "Multi(Multi)(ple(s))" has basically turned the gallery in to an art shop.

Portraits of an artist as a young man — and an older one
Yasumasa Morimura is a weird mixture of curator, artist and simple art lover. Throughout his career he has selected famous portraits and paintings of people and then faithfully recreated them, with the exception of superimposing his own face on the subjects.

We lack the necessary perspective when it comes to judging what it is about our time that is most important or representative culture-wise, for which reason the work of drawing up grand lists — the creation of a canon of the moment — is best left to those who come after.

Spreading the word through manga
Videos of anime conventions in America greet visitors to Tokyo's Museum of Contemporary Art at this summer's "The Power of Manga — Osamu Tezuka and Shotaro Ishinomori" exhibition. Looped footage of attendants in cosplay at the Los Angeles Anime Expo and other similar events play, while a "prologue" banner nearby declares in Japanese and English, "Manga is a cultural genre of which Japan can be proud of."

Are we all blinded by our sense of beauty?
Sophie Calle is an enigma. She is an artist, writer, photographer and filmmaker yet doesn't work exclusively in any of these areas. She has become famous for her work in photography but her objects and later films have drawn equal attention — work that carries with it the curiosity of a detective who chases ghosts. Invariably, she is known to makes things that are as much about her as they are about others. A reputation clearly described in a recent interview with Stuart Jeffries for The Guardian. When asked her age she then continued to explain the story of her life for "maybe 10 hours" she said. "I can talk about my life endlessly."
