Yukako Kawai won Japan’s first wrestling gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday by outpointing Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova 4-3 in a frenetic women’s 62-kilogram final.
After taking a 4-1 lead, the 23-year-old Kawai survived a late fightback from 2019 world champion Tynybekova to win gold in her first Olympics.
